"Son, we are leaving". The four words that shattered my heart as a 13-year-old. Although I was not ready to face such a reality, it had now become inevitable. On the 5th of January, 2017, I along with my family were stamped with "exits" on our passports and we moved to a new country, ready to embark on a new journey in our lives.

Each year, hundreds and thousands of families move to different localities with different goals. Some move due to work related commitments, whereas some even migrate due to possible security threats faced by them in their expatriate or home country. Whatever the reason may be, moving to a new environment brings loads of challenges and may affect a person negatively. Being a person who moved at a tender age, I struggled to accept the new city I lived in, plunging myself into denial. Likewise, many other people are struck with issues such as depression and might socially detach themselves, leading to mental and physical deterioration. However, as humans, it is essential that we encourage ourselves to adapt and grow so that we can adjust to the ups and downs life throws at us. Here are a few ways you can adapt to a change in setting:

  1. Embrace your surroundings

Whatever the situation, try to view it as an adventure. Explore new surroundings by planning a picnic or traveling to the nearest mall. The goal is to participate in interesting activities offered in the neighborhood to help you alleviate tension. Allow the adrenaline to rise! It would definitely help you achieve your goals or complete your daily tasks.

  1. Socialize

There are several ways you can blend in with your community. You can host a house dinner where you invite your neighbors or attend local community events. If you move to a country where language is a barrier, learn the language to help you engage with more people effectively.

  1. Pursue your hobby

Attending clubs and events might not be everyone's cup of tea, and so pursuing a passion can be a great way to help you get your mind off old thoughts. You can join clubs that interest you; book clubs, hiking clubs, and sports clubs are some of the various circles available in societies. You can even log your progress on social media and meet people who share your activity, thus making your own coterie of buddies along the way.

  1. Take the optimistic approach

It is vital to have a positive mindset before doing anything. It helps you foster better communication and empathy, which increases productivity. Being a positive thinker, you may automatically develop coping skills as you tend to stay happy and try to overcome every challenge brought to you with determination. Ultimately, it creates a healthier lifestyle and rejuvenates your inner self.

  1. Acceptance

The most important step in this new chapter is to choose the path of acceptance. Facing reality and accepting new difficulties helps you grow into a better person. As John Cambell said, "We must let go of the life we have planned so as to accept the one that is waiting for us." Never let fear get in your way, and always do the things you think are best for you. There would be many unexpected events during this new time, and relaxing is the key to solving any problem.

Moving to a new place surely brings some sort of struggle, and always keep in mind that it takes time to adjust to a new place. Rushing would do you no good. Determine your pace and be prepared to begin a new life.
